Why are zebrafish useful in scientific research
Zebrafish (confirm introduction )

At present, scientists have discovered through research on zebrafish that ketamine and nicotine are endosmotic disruptors that will disrupt the body's normal hormone levels. In addition, zebrafish is also showing its talents in many fields such as genetic development, neurodegenerative diseases, drug selection, and tissue regeneration.

Biologist Joshna Kanongo, the founder of the above-mentioned zebrafish laboratory, said that zebrafish are "excellent test subjects" before drugs are included in human clinical trials. There are several reasons for this:

First of all, as Kanongo said: "Zebrafish are like humans in many ways." Zebrafish are not the same as fruit flies and nematodes and other species commonly used in the laboratory. It is a vertebrate animal with more than 80% of its genes similar to humans. The heart of zebrafish, like a normal human heart, rhythmically delivers oxygenated blood to all parts of the body. In addition, this small fish also has organs such as liver, pancreas and intestines.

Secondly, using zebrafish for research can save costs. Zebrafish lay large amounts of eggs and are easy to raise. Their mating is not seasonal, and their embryos can be obtained for research all year round. At the same time, the skin of zebrafish is permeable and can absorb drugs in the water. Therefore, when trying a certain drug, you only need to add it to the water, which is simple and easy. Kanongo said: "We can produce hundreds or even thousands of embryos at a time, and the cost is much lower than before."

Third, zebrafish are transparent and can be observed. The early embryos of zebrafish are transparent and grow and develop outside the body. The development of the embryos at various stages can be well observed through a microscope. Now, scientists have also bred zebrafish that remain transparent even after adulthood. Kanongo said: "This is particularly exciting because under the microscope you can observe the development of their organs and systems, and you can see their blood vibrating and their hearts beating."
